April 30-May 1, 2014

Abstract: In 2006 the Hanukkah Eve storm hit the Puget Sound area and knocked out power to approximately 180,000, almost 50%, of Seattle City Light customers.

In response to an after-storm evaluation, SCL implemented a new Outage Management System in 2009. The system has improved customer service by integrating data from existing information systems to predict which customers are out based on a SCADA interface, customer calls to the Call Center and to the IVR system during blue sky outages and during storm events.

Real time information about the location, cause, and estimated restoration time is available to Call Center employees, SCL Public Information Office, Major Account Executives and Operations staff. Near real time information is displayed to the public through a map on SCL website with an additional map optimized for mobile devices.

The presentation will highlight the drivers for the project, the business objectives, the implementation, and a summary of lessons learned.
